Time Difference Calculator

Pick two places to see how many hours apart their clocks are right now. Daylight saving time is included, and the chart below shows the weeks when the gap is different.

London is 5 hours ahead of New York

When it's 9:00 AM in New York, it's 2:00 PM in London.

Their 9-to-5 working days overlap for 3 hours: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM in New York, which is 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM in London.

How the difference changes

The two places change their clocks on different dates, so the gap moves when either one does:

How to work out a time difference

Every clock is set to an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Subtract one offset from the other and you have the difference. In July, London is on UTC+1 and New York on UTC−4: 1 − (−4) = 5, so London is 5 hours ahead. In January London is on UTC+0 and New York on UTC−5, which is still 5 hours.

Some offsets are not whole hours. India is UTC+5:30 all year, so it is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of London in summer and 5 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter. Newfoundland is UTC−3:30 (UTC−2:30 in summer), Iran UTC+3:30, Adelaide UTC+9:30 (UTC+10:30 in summer) and Nepal UTC+5:45.

Why the difference changes during the year

Places that use daylight saving time move their clocks forward an hour in their summer, but not on the same dates:

So New York and London are 4 hours apart, not 5, for about three weeks in March and one week around the start of November. Sydney's clocks move the opposite way to Europe's, so London and Sydney are 9, 10 or 11 hours apart depending on the month. Many places, including India, China, Japan, the Gulf states and most of Africa, never change their clocks; the gap to them moves only when the other place changes.

Ahead or behind?

A place that is ahead has a later clock time. When New York is on daylight time, Tokyo is 13 hours ahead: 8:00 PM on Tuesday in New York is 9:00 AM on Wednesday in Tokyo. If the difference is more than the hours left in the day, the place ahead is already on the next date; the calculator says so when that is the case right now.
