When the difference changes

European and US clocks change on different dates, so the gap moves when either side changes. Changes in the coming year:

Standard or daylight time?

Strictly, EST is standard time. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November the clocks show EDT instead. Most people keep writing EST all year to mean the zone, and this page does the same: times follow the clocks in New York whatever the season.

CET and CEST

CET is UTC+1. From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October the same countries use Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2). The whole EU changes at 01:00 UTC, the same moment in every country, so Paris, Berlin and Madrid never disagree.

Countries on Central European Time

Germany, France, Spain (apart from the Canary Islands), Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Czechia, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, among others. The UK, Ireland and Portugal are an hour behind; Greece, Finland and the Baltic states an hour ahead.
