Daylight saving time

Both zones change their clocks on the same nights, so Eastern Time stays 2 hours ahead of Mountain Time all year. Each zone changes at 2:00 a.m. its own time, so for a few hours on those nights the gap is off by one hour. The next changes:

Standard or daylight time?

Strictly, MST and EST are standard time. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November the clocks show MDT and EDT instead. Most people keep writing MST and EST all year to mean the zone, and this page does the same: times follow the clocks in Denver and New York whatever the season.

Arizona

Arizona, apart from the Navajo Nation, does not use daylight saving time. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, Phoenix is 3 hours behind New York; the rest of the year it is 2 hours behind. So “10 AM MST” from Phoenix in July is 1:00 PM Eastern, not noon.

Right now New York is 3 hours ahead of Phoenix. More on the Arizona time zone.

Where Mountain Time is used

All of Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, most of Idaho, and the western parts of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. It also covers a corner of eastern Oregon and El Paso in West Texas.
