When the difference changes

UTC never changes, so the gap moves only when US clocks do. Changes in the coming year:

Standard or daylight time?

Strictly, PST is standard time. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November the clocks show PDT instead. Most people keep writing PST all year to mean the zone, and this page does the same: times follow the clocks in Los Angeles whatever the season.

The date can change

Any UTC time before 07:00 (08:00 in winter) is still the previous day in California. Midnight UTC is 5:00 PM PDT or 4:00 PM PST the day before, so a release or deadline set for 00:00 UTC on the 15th lands on the afternoon of the 14th in Pacific Time.

Quick reference

The start of a Pacific workday, 9:00 AM, is 16:00 UTC in summer and 17:00 UTC in winter. Its end, 5:00 PM, is 00:00 or 01:00 UTC the next day.
