When the difference changes

GMT never changes, so the gap moves only when US clocks do. Changes in the coming year:

Standard or daylight time?

Strictly, EST is standard time. From the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November the clocks show EDT instead. Most people keep writing EST all year to mean the zone, and this page does the same: times follow the clocks in New York whatever the season.

GMT or UK time?

GMT is the UK's winter time. From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October the UK uses British Summer Time (BST, GMT+1), so a London time in summer is not GMT. If someone in London says 3:00 PM in July, that is 10:00 AM in New York, not 11:00 AM. For London times, use the UK time to EST converter, which follows London's clock all year.

GMT and UTC

For everyday use GMT and UTC are the same clock. UTC is the scientific standard kept by atomic clocks; GMT is the older name, still used for UK winter time and by many people to mean UTC. This page and theUTC to EST page give the same answers.
