What Time Zone Is Michigan In?

Michigan is on Eastern Time, except for four Upper Peninsula counties on the Wisconsin border: Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee, which are on Central Time, one hour behind. The whole state uses daylight saving time.

The four Central Time counties

Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties run along the Wisconsin state line in the western Upper Peninsula. They keep the same time as Wisconsin across the border. Their main towns are Ironwood, Iron River, Iron Mountain and Menominee.

The rest of the Upper Peninsula, including Marquette, Escanaba, Houghton and Sault Ste. Marie, is on Eastern Time along with the Lower Peninsula. Driving east out of the four counties into Ontonagon, Marquette or Delta County moves you onto Eastern Time.

The IANA time zone database gives these counties their own zone, America/Menominee, because their clock history differs from Chicago's. A device set to it shows the same time as Chicago today.

How the Upper Peninsula ended up split

Michigan adopted Central Time across the whole state in 1885. Detroit switched to Eastern Time in 1915 to match New York, and most of the state followed in 1931. When the Uniform Time Act took effect in 1967, the Upper Peninsula was on Central Standard Time all year, without daylight saving time. In 1973 most of the peninsula moved to Eastern Time, leaving only the four western counties on Central.
